The media and the left have been working to tie this tragedy to conservatism. People who knew Jared Loughner knew him to be a liberal, and therefore he is extremely susceptible to the rhetoric of Sarah Palin.
The obvious implication is that the left is incapable invoking rhetoric that they think could incite violence. I think for once they might be right....
Exhibit A: The award-winning fantasy film about administering a powerful sleeping pill to George W. Bush.
Exhibit B: Leftist cartoonist Ted Rall extolling the virtues of peaceful political struggle.
Christian fundamentalists, the millennial end-of-theworlders obsessed with the Left Behind series about the End Times, neo-Nazi racists, rural black-helicopter Michigan Militia types cut from the same inbred cloth as Timothy McVeigh, allied with “mainstream” gun nuts and right-wing Republicans, have been planning, preparing, and praying for the destruction of the “Godless,” “secular” United States for decades. In the past, they formed groups like the John Birch Society and the Aryan Nations. Now the hard Right has a postmodern, decentralized non-organization organization called the Tea Party.
Right-wing organizational names change, but they amount to the same thing: the reactionary sociopolitical force—the sole force—poised to fill the vacuum when collapse occurs. The scenario outlined by Margaret Atwood’s prescient novel The Handmaid’s Tale—rednecks in the trenches, hard military men running things, minorities and liberals taken away and massacred, setting the stage for an even more extreme form of laissez-faire corporate capitalism than we’re suffering under today—is a fair guess of how a post-U.S. scenario will play out unless we prepare to turn it in another direction…
A war is coming. At stake: our lives, the planet, freedom, living. The government, the corporations, and the extreme right are prepared to coalesce into an Axis of Evil. Are you going to fight back? Will you do whatever it takes, including taking up arms?…
...Part of the revolution may be fought virtually by hackers. Those individuals are every bit as valauable as people who blow things up.
Exhibit C: Barack Obama explains to voters the dangers of incorporating guns into political rhetoric..
Mobster wisdom tells us never to bring a knife to a gun fight. But what does political wisdom say about bringing a gun to a knife fight?
Sen. Barack Obama talks at a town hall meeting at Radnor Middle School in Wayne, Pa., Saturday, June 14. (AP) That’s exactly what Barack Obama said he would do to counter Republican attacks “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun,” Obama said at a Philadelphia fundraiser Friday night.

I apologize to the conservative base that reads this blog if they feel betrayed by this post...but to quote Ronald Reagan, "the facts are stupid things." Yeah he meant to say "stubborn," but now he gets to be right times two.
(I apologize even harder if they don't know sarcasm.)
For the record, I hate that I have to do posts like this. I am thoroughly disgusted that the discussion has degenerated to partisan fight, perpetrated by ignorant leftists who don't even know thing one about this lunatic but post on Twitter and in the blogosphere that either this guy was conservative, or that he was influenced by the likes of Sarah Palin. If the lies tying this to conservatism don't get push back then the scumbags telling them win.Add a comment
I normally take time when tragedy like the shooting at an event with congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) happens because I really want see what's happening before drawing any conclusions. Then there are some people, like Marty Kaplan over at the Huffington Post, who take the opportunity to politicize this before the blood spilled has even had a chance to dry....
I'm not saying that putting a bullseye on Arizona Democrat Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' congressional race - as Sarah Palin did - was an explicit or intentional invitation to violence. Nor am I saying that the "Get on Target for Victory" events held by the guy Giffords beat - "Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly" - was the reason her assassin went after her. This tragedy is still unfolding, and the questions of motive and incitement will be argued about for a long time to come.
But I am saying that the "lock and load"/"take up your arms" rhetoric of American politics isn't just an overheated metaphor.....
You can read the rest of this garbage here.
I don't know if a guy like Jared Loughner...
...would have looked to Sarah Palin or Jesse Kelly for inspiration. Then again, I know as much about this guy as Kaplan does.
One thing I know for sure is that Jared Loughner, if everything turns out the way it looks to be going, is a crazed lunatic who doesn't fit into any box. Certainly not the one that Kaplan (based on the column he wrote) would want to put him in.
Crazy is as crazy does. It doesn't know reality, much less partisan politics.
That never stops the left from tying lunatic behavior to the rhetoric of conservatism and people who subscribe to it. Put any Tea Party rally up against any pro-illegal immigration rally. Tally up the number of arrests that get made for people getting out of hand at these events.
How many Christian conservatives do you see at the G8 protests? I don't think you need to count on even one hand to arrive at the number.
Is one side perfect over the other? Of course not! The incident last year with what happened to liberal activist Lauren Valle having her head "stompped" at a Rand Paul campaign event is an example of this (it's also the exception).
The way Kaplan carries on you'd think politically motivated assassination by people who are insane was only invented today. Crazy people weren't waiting for the rhetoric of Sarah Palin like some code word to activate.
Putting on kneepads, a helmet, and attaching warning signs to rhetoric and metaphor don't prevent crazy people from doing crazy things. Neither does wiping them from existence. This guy appears to be an axe grinder fueled by total delusion. Nothing would ever make him happy. Giffords could've been a member of the "Jared Loughner Is Infallibly Brilliant Party" and this tragedy would not have been prevented..
Then again, as stated before, I don't know Jared Loughner.
Neither does Marty Kaplan, who should be ashamed of himself for politicizing this so quickly.
This is apparently a true story that has been around for years, but I'm just hearing about it so it can't be that well known right (ha ha ha).
Ted Nugent, a heavy metal guitar legend and devoted (bow) hunter, was being interviewed by a French journalist. Eventually, the conversation turned to his love of outdoor pursuits. The journalist asked, "What do you think the last thought is in the head of a deer before you shoot it? Is it, "Are you my friend?" or maybe "Are you the one who killed my brother?"
Nugent replied, "They aren't capable of that kind of thinking. All they care about is, What am I going to eat next? Who am I going to screw next? and, Can I run fast enough to get away? They are very much like the French in that."
Ted Nugent is sort of awesome...Add a comment
Years ago, before I started The Looking Spoon, some guy (a liberal) on this message board I used frequent on Myspace (when it, and Obama were still cool) posted this question. I found this response in a word doc while going through some old computer files, and I still like it.
My response was as follows:

One, because he'll just do it.
Unless of course a Democrat is his supervisor....
Then he'll have to make sure his union contract allows him to handle light bulbs. If it does then he will have to make sure the light bulb was made in a union light bulb factory.
Before he inserts the bulb he will need an OSHA inspector to make sure there is no water within a 2 mile radius so that the Republican doesn't get shocked. The OSHA inspector must also inspect the rubber gloves he must wear (because rubber is not a conductor, as determined by an appointed joint committee of OSHA, the FDA, the CDC, the EPA, and the NWA) for any holes that could subject him to shock.
After the light bulb is screwed in, the dead light bulb (assuming the light bulb screwed in was replacing another light bulb) must be inspected to make sure that it was built in a union shop. If not the FBI will have to be dispatched to investigate this slip in the EPA approved crack.
Before the light bulb is discarded it must be observed by a federal safety commissioner (not to be confused with OSHA) and an EPA field representative to make sure that it is disposed of in an eco-friendly and child-proof way.
Afterward, an after-action report will have to be filed and the above mentioned joint comittee will have to be briefed on it. To make sure everything is above-board it will have to air on C-Span.
So the real question is, how many Democrats does it take to screw in a light bulb....but there are so many mitigating factors...I'll have to just estimate....237

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that “conservative” is still the most favored description. Forty-two percent (42%) of Likely U.S. Voters say they view it as a positive if a candidate is described as politically conservative. Twenty-one percent (21%) say it’s a negative description, and 36% rate it somewhere in between the two.
Conservative, in fact, is the only political label other than “moderate” that is a net plus for a candidate...
Being described as a progressive, on the other hand, is a positive for 22% of voters and a negative for 34%, with 41% seeing it in between. But in the previous survey, voters were evenly divided, with 29% saying progressive was a positive description and 28% describing it as a negative. This marks a continuing downward trend for progressive which little over three years ago was slightly more popular than conservative.
See liberals? You're not fooling ANYONE by calling yourselves "progressives." You are the lipstick on a pig!
Progressive: Progressive Chocolate Pie! Get your Progressive Chocolate Pie here!
Voter: Ooooh I love chocolate pie.
Progressive: Well then you're in for a real treat my friend.
Voter: Hey, aren't you the guy that was selling Liberal Chocolate Pie last week?
Progressive: Nope, totally different guy.
Voter: Really? You sound a lot like him. I kind of remember, because men usually don't sound so girly.
Progressive: My friend, I am not that person.
Voter: I hope not, because I bought a Liberal Chocolate Pie last week and the chocolate was actually dog poo.
Progressive: Progressive Chocolate Pies are not made of dog poo. It's tasty chocolate.
Voter: Um, well....alright I'll give one a try. How much?
Progressive: Oh, I don't want your money, here at Progressive Chocolate Pies we barter.
Voter: Uh, okay...what if I don't have anything you want?
Progressive: Everyone has something progressives want, guaranteed.
Voter: ......so what do you want?
Progressive: Your freedom.
Progressive: Ok fine, the American Dream.
Voter: F*@k you man! I'm out of here!
Progressive: WAIT! Ok, because you're a first time customer, and I like you I'm going to cut you a deal. I'll give you a 4 year supply, and all it'll cost are occasional, but temporarily permantent intrusions into your life, but it'll be for your own good.
Voter: For example?
Progressive: Do you want to lose weight?
Voter: ...yeah, I could trim up a bit.
Progressive: We'll tell you what to eat, starting with these pies.
Voter: But thats 4 years of chocolate.
Progressive: These pies don't make you fat.
Voter: ..............what else?
Progressive: Want a lower electricity bill.
Voter: Who wouldn't?
Progressive: We'll tell you what light bulbs to use.
Voter: What if I know better what works for my home?
Progressive: You don't, so how about a lower internet bill.
Voter: You would do that too? It's starting to look like this won't cost me anything.
Progressive: Exactly, if you use less of it then you'll be charged less.
Voter: But what if I use more, I could potentially pay more than I am now, right?
Progressive: So you're all set! Here are your pies.
Voter: Uh....alright. They better be good.
Progressive: They're the best.
Voter: (sniff) What's that....smell? Wait a second!
Voter: Awwwww damn it, IT'S POOP AGAIN!

Daley's selection was immediately hailed by business groups. But reaction among liberal Democrats was more mixed, with some predicting Daley would bring a breath of fresh air to Obama's insular White House operation and others fretting that the new chief of staff's centrist politics herald a shift to the right in Obama policies.
Has the left already forgotten the election? Incompetence wasn't defeated, like in 2006, this was about ideology. I'll never expect the left to stop plugging away at American Dream, but they can at least try to know when they've been beaten?
Personally, when I hear anything about Democrats moving to the center thats when conservative loins need to be girded harder than Biden starting a sentence with "I've been thinking," because that's when you need to start hiring the food tasters and checking for booby traps. These people would make it illegal to center text in Microsoft Word if they could (don't even get them started on the 'impossibility" of "right justify")
They don't live in the center, they don't even visit it, what you're seeing is just their reflection....coming from a telepromter...

"The Congressional Budget office confirms that just one day after taking over the House, the Republican rhetoric on fiscal discipline doesn't meet the reality test as their plans to take away valued health benefits from the American people will balloon our deficit by $230 billion over 10 years," House Ways and Means Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-Mich.) said in a statement Thursday.
Has nobody told the Democrats yet that nobody believes a job-killing, bureaucracy exploding bill that spends a trillion dollars, enacted in the midst of a trillion dollar budget deficit is going to do anything to BUT explode this country fiscally?
Here's a solid analysis of why from National Review. Check it out because you don't get that kind of smart here, just smart ass.
It is said that we should never say "never," I don't know who came up with this saying, because they're saying "never" when they're admonishing you never say it, so not only this nincompoop wrong, but they're a hypocrite too..."progressives"....
Can't live with 'em...can't go to hell with out 'em.
Having said that this is the perfect time to remind everyone that the government is NEVER correct when it comes to predicting how much money it spends.
It has also NEVER reduced spending by adding to it's size, that's like saying you're going to lose weight on a steady diet of donuts, milkshakes, and couch potato.
I don't really know why the heck Dems are wasting their time crying about this. They should save their tears for something that would really make them upset.
Its DOA in the Senate before Obama will ever have a chance to veto it, and thats ok. Battering rams NEVER break down a door on the first swing.

For more than 200 years, Americans have revered the Constitution as the law of the land, but the GOP and tea party heralding of the document in recent months - and the planned recitation on the House floor Thursday - have caused some Democrats to worry that the charter is being misconstrued as the immutable word of God.
"They are reading it like a sacred text," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.)...who argued that the Founders were not "demigods" and that the document's need for amendments to abolish slavery and other injustices showed it was "highly imperfect."
"You are not supposed to worship your constitution. You are supposed to govern your government by it," he said.
So now conservatives are a bunch of religious zealots bowing at the altar of the Constitution? Why? Because we'd rather read it than roll it up and smoke it?
Their reaction to this has been really puzzling, because its not like we're asking Biden read it. I'm sure Boehner will find a someone more capable of being up to the task...like a 5th grader.
Maybe they're just freaking out about reading it because they have a natural fear of the unknown.
A constitution isn't just something people need to withstand the assault that is left-wing politics. Governments need them too! "Progressives" know this, that's the real reason why they're so apopletic about this. They don't want Democrats, much less the country, to be reminded that the Constitution isn't some abstract thing that liberals can invoke like a sort of ideological race card to justify scratching their dictatorial itches.
Reading it would show that there are, in fact, actual rules and guidelines set in it....
There ain't no rules here, we're trying to accomplish something...When the deal goes down...All this talk about rules...we make 'em up as we go along.

Democrats have been trying to cast Republican members' acceptance of federal health benefits as hypocritical, as they seek to repeal last year's health care legislation..."It was a central value to us when we passed health care, and a central value to the American people, that members of Congress should get the same health care as eveyrone else," (New York Democratic Senator Chuck)Schumer told POLITICO this morning. "It seems unfair that house Republicans want to deprive middle-class Americans of the same health care as members of Congress but to keep it for themselves."

There must be something about the winter air in New York that makes liberals there especially stupid around now. It was about this time last year that Schumer called a flight attendant a "bitch" because she had the audacity to make him shut off his cell phone during a flight, just like everyone else.
Now he's trying to equate acceptance of the employer-based health insurance Congress receives to the ObamaCare ponzi scheme. I would say its grandstanding and he knows he's full of it, but it's so obviously not the same thing that it's not even something that needs to be debated.
Schumer drawing in crayon on the original Declaration of Independence, or his dropping trou and urinating on the capital rotunda would've seemed more intelligent.
